Any Old Thing!

Last weekend a group of our friends held the 6th Annual Fundraising Garage Sale.   The monies raised at this event support a group of orphans - approximately 50 children - in Mwanza, Tanzania.   One of the couples that hosts this event are actively involved in the overseeing of the project and go to Africa periodically to check in...

It is always a bit of a scramble to get items together for the garage sale....and it is a LOT of work.   It requires a major home clean-out, washing, sorting, pricing, and packing of items to get it over to where the sale takes place.   We are fortunate that we also have friends and relatives to give us a hand with donations.

The day before the event some of the group arrive to set up and receive goods.

In our home, I am the one that prepares for this event and my husband helps deliver the many boxes.   What this really means is that until we get there, he doesn't know what we are donating (although I would always have been happy for his help at any point along the way).   Now, please understand that my darling husband is a collector....a collector of "any old thing!" Or at least that is how it seems to me sometimes....me, who is not a collector of stuff!  What that really means is that sometimes we take stuff to donate to the sale, and then bring some of it back home again (to be reviewed next year)!

The event went well and it was a wonderful day of sunshine, visiting, negotiating and selling.  Oh, and the guys even did some home deliveries to folks living in the neighborhood.

Some of the sale items even found their way into the pockets of the workers..."for the little grands".

This year the sale made nearly $3000 in sales and donations.  This amount of money significantly impacts the quality of life for the kids in the orphanage.   There are three students who are graduating that will now receive vocational training.

On the way home, we were once again talking about my husband's fondness for "any old thing".   Our marriage of 38 years just may be in good shape because as we age  his fondness grows for "old things!"

A big THANK YOU to all that made this year's sale successful!
