Today we are celebrating Canada's birthday. Canada became a country on July 1, 1867 and consisted of the bringing together of 4 provinces - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. As the first peoples of Canada were Aboriginal, the name "Canada" comes from the Huron and Iroquois work "Kanata" meaning "village" and was named by Jacques Cartier (1535) from France. At this time Canada is the second largest country in the world, with Russia being the largest.
Today we celebrate - food, fun, fellowship and fireworks....and we express an appreciation of being able to live in a country that enjoys many freedoms and "rights"...the right to vote, to be recognized as individuals with human rights, to worship in the religion of choice, to express opinions and challenge, among many other things.
For this I am truly grateful!
